As we step into April, let’s shed light on two conditions that affect vision and quality of life: Strabismus and Nystagmus. Did you know that over 2.4 million African children live with untreated strabismus? And nystagmus, though less common affects 1 in 1500 children?
Strabismus, often called “squint” or “crossed eyes”, occurs when the eyes do not align properly (point in different directions) due to imbalanced eye muscles, nerve issues, uncorrected refractive errors, trauma or neurological conditions. Symptoms include:
- Misaligned eyes (turning inward, outward, upward, or downward).
- Double vision, eye strain, or head tilting to focus.
- Reduced depth perception.
Strabismus can be treated by using glasses, vision therapy and in some cases, surgery. It is important to act promptly because if left untreated, strabismus can lead to amblyopia (where the eye becomes lazy and the brain starts ignoring the weaker eye). It is pertinent to note that kids don’t always outgrow it and adults are not immune to strabismus as trauma, stroke or untreated childhood strabismus can also cause it.
Nystagmus (“dancing eyes”) is a condition where the eyes move uncontrollably and rapidly which often reduces vision clarity. While some cases are congenital (present from birth), others are acquired due to serious medical conditions (e.g., multiple sclerosis), inner ear issues, or head injuries. Symptoms include:
- Involuntary eye movements (especially when looking sideways)
- Blurry vision, head tilting
- Difficulty focusing especially when stressed.
While nystagmus is not curable, glasses, contact lenses or low vision aids can significantly improve quality of life, enhance clarity and slow eye movement. Asides vision, nystagmus and strabismus can also affect social interactions, overall confidence and make daily tasks challenging. Too many people delay treatment because they think nothing can be done. Early detection and action changes lives! This is to maximize visual development in children, improve comfort and build confidence. If you or a loved one shows symptoms, visit an eye clinic promptly.
