Welcome to the month of June. In this month, we are increasing awareness on cataract. Do you know that cataract is one of the leading causes of blindness in the world? The good thing is blindness due to cataract is preventable.
Cataract is a clouding of the eye’s lens which disrupts the passage of light into the eye. In the eye, there is a clear lens that helps focus light on the retina. Over time due to age or under certain conditions, the eye begins to lose its transparency and becomes cloudy.
Cataract occurs mainly due to age. Occasionally, cataract may develop due to long term exposure to ultraviolet rays, certain systemic diseases such as diabetes, eye inflammation or injuries, smoking and prolonged use of drugs such as steroids.
People with cataract might experience blurry or cloudy vision, halos around light, glare, increased light sensitivity, difficulty seeing at night and frequent change in prescription. It is important to have a comprehensive examination because these symptoms might be due to other conditions. There is no way to prevent age-related cataract but maintaining a healthy lifestyle such as eating balanced diet, protecting the eyes from UV rays, maintaining blood pressure and sugar levels, avoiding smoking, and wearing protective eye wear at work can slow progression.
Cataract is diagnosed during a comprehensive eye examination and the only treatment for cataract is surgery. It is pertinent to note the following points:
